If you or an employee pay a business expense using personal funds, complete an expense reimbursement form if you or your staff would like to be reimbursed by the business. This will help you ensure that all of your business expenses are captured and accounted for.

With the standard mileage at 54.5 cents per mile for 2018, it might be time to revisit what yields the more substantial deduction—the standard mileage rate for each business mile, or your actual car expenses. If this is the first year you have business use of an automobile, you don’t have to decide which method yields the better result until you file your return. Admittedly, claiming the standard mileage rate is a lot easier for most of us. All we have to do is keep track of our business miles and multiply them by the current rate.

When non-employees perform work for you in your trade or business, it’s important to obtain a Form W-9, Request for Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and Certification, before paying them. Taxpayers use a Form W-9 to provide their correct TIN to the person who is required to file an information return with the IRS to report income paid to the taxpayer.
If you pay someone who is not your employee $600 or more, you are required to issue a Form 1099-MISC, Miscellaneous Income.
